01The Challenge

Problem Statement

Complex Radiology Workflows Required a Unified Digital Platform

The radiology ecosystem relied on multiple clinical, operational, financial, and administrative applications, creating complexity across the end-to-end imaging workflow integrating RIS, PACS, payments, clinical forms, and external systems while maintaining reliable data exchange, security, and multi-site isolation presented significant challenges. The organization needed a scalable, modular platform that could unify workflows, enable seamless application integration, and automate clinical and financial processes from imaging order to settlement.

Key challenges included:

  • Managing 14 independently deployable applications across clinical, financial, scheduling, and collaboration domains.
  • Reliably exchanging high-volume clinical orders and results with external RIS systems.
  • Integrating PACS, payment gateways, clinical forms, and other external systems.
  • Maintaining secure data isolation across multiple Medical Imaging Providers and sites.
  • Automating radiologist fee splitting and financial settlement.
  • Providing a seamless single sign-on experience across multiple applications.
  • Managing complex clinical form data within the existing HL7 reporting workflow.

The solution included:

  • Developed 14 React frontend + Spring Boot backend applications.
  • Implemented RabbitMQ-based asynchronous communication for high-volume cross-application workflows.
  • Integrated external RIS systems using HL7 v2 over MLLP.
  • Integrated PACS through Orthanc REST/DICOM.
  • Created a single authoritative Interface Control Document (ICD) for platform interfaces.
  • Integrated dynamic clinical forms into the HL7 reporting pipeline.

SSOSingle sign-on across all applications

Key Benefits Delivered

  • 14 independently deployable applications enabling independent development, deployment, and scaling.
  • End-to-end automation from RIS order intake — radiologist reporting — verification — result delivery — invoicing.
  • Automated radiologist fee splitting and financial settlement, reducing manual reconciliation.
  • Single sign-on across the entire application suite through Radian Connect and Launchpad.
  • Resilient clinical and financial data exchange using acknowledgement, dead-letter handling, redelivery, and HL7 resend mechanisms.
  • Multi-tenant readiness through dynamic per-MIP/site messaging queues.
  • Consistent security across the 14-application environment.
  • Centralized technical documentation through a single authoritative ICD.
